Spain kicks off the new onion harvest with a head start over northern Europe

Once again, Spain is among the first European countries to begin harvesting the new onion crop. Thanks to the country’s climate and the expertise of its agricultural sector, the new Spanish season begins approximately a month and a half earlier than in other Northern European countries.

This head start allows Spanish onions to reach the European market sooner, offering a fresh, locally sourced product with full quality guarantees at a key moment for international distribution and supply.

This is due, in part, to the fact that the weather conditions and agricultural diversity of Spain’s growing regions enable the production of early onions with excellent characteristics in terms of size, texture, and shelf life. In addition, the early start of the season promotes greater supply stability during the summer months.

The development and adoption of state-of-the-art hybrid varieties have also made it possible to harvest onions in May with optimal firmness and golden skins, achieving a level of quality that meets the standards required by Spanish and European supermarkets. Years ago, early onions in Spain were associated with varieties that had more fragile skins and were difficult to pack, mainly due to less adequate post-harvest storage.

The new harvest also marks the start of a busy season in the fields and at packing facilities, where farmers and companies work to ensure that the product reaches both the domestic market and various European destinations in optimal condition.

In a market where traceability, freshness, and local sourcing are becoming increasingly important to consumers and distributors, Spanish onions continue to solidify their position as a benchmark within the European market.

That is why, at Cebollas Aparici, we remain committed to careful, sustainable production tailored to market needs, accompanying each harvest from the point of origin to the product’s final destination.

The arrival of the new season also presents an opportunity to continue highlighting the work of Spanish farmers and the quality of one of the most important products in the national fruit and vegetable sector.
